The Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH), in St. James, has received medical supplies and equipment valued at more than $1.2 million from the Hummingbirds Association, a Jamaican diaspora organisation based in The Bahamas.
The donation, which includes bassinets, baby scales, infusion pumps and a paediatric laryngoscope, is expected to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to deliver safe, quality care to newborns and paediatric patients across western Jamaica, particularly in the aftermath of recent hurricane-related losses.
During the handover of the items at the facility on December 22, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at CRH, Charmaine Williams-Beckford, welcomed the support, noting the immediate impact the donation will have on service delivery.
“At this time, especially having gone through the hurricane and lost some of our equipment, this gift is very timely and will help to increase the number of bassinets and other equipment we have on the ground immediately to serve the population that we have at this time,” the CEO added.
Departmental Nurse Manager for the Paediatric Department at CRH, Cassandra Jones-Watson, also underscored the importance of the equipment for the hospital’s most vulnerable patients.
“I am extremely touched that you would have extended your benevolence to us here at the Cornwall Regional Hospital, more so, to the very vulnerable group of patients we have here, which represent all paediatric clients and all sorts of neonates,” Mrs. Jones-Watson said.
For her part, Public Relations Officer for the Hummingbirds Association, Sharon Purser-Cooper, said the donation forms part of the 47-year-old organisation’s long-standing commitment to support public health institutions in Jamaica.
She noted that CRH is one of several hospitals that have benefited from the Association’s outreach over the years.
“We are delighted on this occasion to be donating equipment to the Cornwall Regional… in order to enhance public healthcare in Jamaica, our homeland,” she said.
The Hummingbirds Association has also been actively involved in disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Melissa, dispatching relief supplies and mobilising support for affected communities, further reinforcing its commitment to Jamaica’s health and social development.
