Contracts Awarded for Infrastructure Works in Two Parishes

Two contracts, valued at approximately $217.9 million, were approved by Cabinet for infrastructure works in St. Thomas and Trelawny under the Sugar Transformation Project.

Providing details at the Jamaica House press briefing, Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, disclosed that a $158 million contract was awarded to Alcar Construction and Haulage Company for civil works at Golden Grove, St. Thomas; while D. R Foote Construction Limited was awarded a sum of $59. 9 million for works at Steele Field in Spicey Hill, Trelawny.

"These two contracts are part of the Barracks Relocation programme under the Sugar Transformation Project. The Government of Jamaica has received financial support from the European Union… and this programme is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and it will affect four sugar producing parishes-Westmoreland, Trelawny, Clarendon and St. Thomas," she said.

Under the programme, eight new communities will be established for families that reside in 26 sugar barracks across the island and the programme will cover infrastructure works and the construction of housing.

The contracts were approved by the National Contracts Commission and the Ministry of Finance and Planning.
