The Full Story

Cabinet has approved the award of a $2.5 billion contract to E. Phil and Sons, for the expansion of the Kingston Container Terminal.
This was announced on (Sept. 4), by Minster of Information and Development, Senator Colin Campbell, at the post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House. Senator Campbell outlined that under this project, the Port Authority of Jamaica would upgrade the terminal to a capacity of some 3.2 million tonnage equivalent units (TEUs), as against the present capacity of 1.6 million TEUs.
The scope of the work will include the paving of approximately 10 hectares of container yard space and the installation of underground services.
“The Port Authority of Jamaica has determined that there is need to increase the container storage capacity at the Terminal, as by December it would become critical. This project is expected to ensure that the present congestion at our port is eased,” Mr. Campbell said.
The final designs for this project is expected to be completed this month.
