Eight students of the Faculty of Engineering and Computing at the University of Technology (UTech), received five scholarships and three bursaries valued at over $1.7 million from Continental Baking Company Limited. The scholarship award exercise, which took place on Wednesday (Nov. 5) at the institution, is the second set of scholarships offered to that university by the baking company. Each scholarship is valued at $300,000 annually, and would be for the entire four years of the programme.
In an interview with JIS News, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computing, Dr. Gossett Oliver, explained that “they (the company) said the whole business of manufacturing in the country wasn’t taking the focus that it ought to, and that it was becoming increasingly difficult to find the typically application- orientated type engineer, and they found it fit to approach UTech to see how best they could make a contribution in putting these people forward”.
He further emphasized, “I really think it is just wonderful to see equal numbers of females and males participating in this scholarship to the extent where they spent periods of time in the industry working with Continental Bakery and they got paid,” adding “we find that people in the industrial world are finding the synergies necessary and it has branded us (UTech) quite differently from other universities that are being esoteric, but we try to be very applied. Our research is very applied in a meaningful way that would be able to help Jamaican industry”.
The new scholarship recipients are Dianne Plummer, Alaina Young, and Sophia Collins while Derrick Solay and Hasini McFarlene are the bursary awardees. The continuing awardees are Andrew Stewart, Ranglee Sewell and bursary recipient, Petal Channer.
Meanwhile, Director, Continental Baking Company, Ewan Cameron, expressed pleasure on behalf of his company, at being able to make a worthwhile contribution, as it was difficult to find persons with the appropriate aptitude to apply knowledge, practically.
