The Full Story

The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) expansion project is to advance this year with work to commence on the new state-of-the-art medical tower.

The Government has set aside more than $1 billion for the undertaking in the 2026/2027 Estimates of Expenditure, which is before the House of Representatives.

Already under the project, the Ring Road has been rerouted, construction of a new parking area completed, and procurement initiated for a contractor to be engaged for construction of the new six-storey tower.

The funds earmarked will also go towards engaging the services of a consultancy firm.

The UHWI is the premier regional referral centre, providing other Caribbean countries with an affordable option for critical services.

Among its services are critical care, which includes accident and emergency, intensive care, neonatal intensive care, coronary care, and specialist care consisting of cardiac and complex neurosurgical procedures.

UHWI remains a regional training facility for medical experts and healthcare professionals and is a centre of excellence for teaching, research, and patient care.
