The Full Story

Minister of Health, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton says a cultural change in service delivery within Jamaica’s health facilities is on the horizon, with the launch of the Compassionate Care Programme.

He stated that practitioners in public health will spark a cultural shift in service delivery, which will in turn enhance the healing process of patients who visit the facilities.

Minister Tufton was speaking at the lunch of the Compassionate Care Programme at the Falmouth Public General Hospital in Trelawny on Friday (October 5).

“We expect that we are starting a cultural change in the way we deliver service, and that cultural change is going to enhance not just the perception of how people see us as practitioners, in this public health space, but also very importantly, we are going to be better practitioners to the patients that we care for… and that’s the core objective of why people come to our health centres and hospitals,” Dr. Tufton highlighted.

The Health Minister also implored health care workers not to take patients for granted, but to make them feel comfortable when they visit.

“The real benefit (of the Compassionate Programme) should be that people feel better about themselves, as it aids the therapeutic and healing process,” he added.          Meanwhile, Dr. Tufton lauded the staff at the hospital for handling the increased work load with professionalism and poise, when services at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James had to be relocated.

“I want to thank Falmouth Hospital for rising to the occasion. Falmouth has become a satellite location for Cornwall in a number of the services and you have done well,” he stated.

At the launch, Minister Tufton also officially declared the newly renovated Falmouth Public General Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit open with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The Compassionate Care Programme is geared towards enhancing the psychological wellness of patients within the public health system as a means of promoting speedy recovery.

The programme was also launched at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James, Black River Hospital in St. Elizabeth and the Victoria Jubilee Hospital in Kingston.
