Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., is urging Jamaicans to pay special attention to vulnerable groups as the threat of Tropical Storm Melissa looms.
With a Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch now in effect for Jamaica, the island can expect Tropical Storm conditions in the next 36 hours and Hurricane conditions within 48 hours.
In a statement released earlier today (October 23), Minister Charles Jr. encourages Jamaicans to stay safe and make the necessary preparations to weather the storm.
“Before the storm, create an emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, and a battery-powered radio. Check on vulnerable neighbours, especially the elderly and those persons with disabilities. Throughout all of this, stay informed. How do you stay informed? Follow official social media channels and emergency alerts for updates,” he said.
The Minister also urged Jamaicans to implement a family emergency plan, including a safe point for meeting and contact information for family members.
“Board up your windows and doors with plywood to prevent any damage if a hurricane is impending. Trim trees and shrubs to minimise branches that could cause damage or block escape routes and remove debris from the surface, so they don’t go into the drains and cause blockage,” he said.
Mr. Charles Jr. is also reminding persons to avoid windows and stay indoors to avoid personal injury.
“Keep your phones and devices charged. Follow evacuation orders from local authorities, which means you have to listen to your radio, listen to your TV, listen to the news and be informed. Keep the radio and TV tuned to local news and emergency alerts. After the storm, we want you to wait for official clearance before venturing into any outdoor spaces; be cautious of fallen power lines, sharp debris, and contaminated water; and document damage for insurance purposes,” he said.
