Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) students pay rapt attention as they are briefed on aspects of cruise-ship operations, during a recent tour of the Carnival Horizon in Ocho Rios, St. Ann.

The Full Story

Forty-four students from the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) got the opportunity to experience first-hand the operations aboard a cruise vessel, when they were recently hosted by the Carnival Horizon in Ocho Rios, St. Ann.

It was the second time since the start of the year that Carnival Corporation was accommodating CMU students, hosting 150 in January and enabling them to see the inner works and functions on board a major cruise line.

The objective was to enhance the students’ maritime education with real-world application, opening their eyes to the vast opportunities in the cruise industry.

The visit began with an educational session led by senior ship officials covering various aspects of cruise-ship operations.

The marine transportation students then toured the ship’s bridge, while the marine engineering students visited the engine control room.

CMU President, Dr. Andrew Spencer, told JIS News that the initiative “stands as a testament to the potential of partnerships between educational institutions and industry leaders to cultivate the talents of tomorrow”.

“We not only consider this visit by our 44 ambitious CMU students onboard the Carnival Horizon a unique experience but also one which continues to highlight the significant engagement between the cruise line and the University.

“The students, evenly split between the Marine Transportation and Marine Engineering programmes, were treated to an insightful day that showcased the inner workings of one of the world’s largest cruise ships. This initiative not only reinforces Carnival’s commitment to the maritime industry but also aims to inspire the next generation of maritime professionals in the Caribbean,” he added.

Dr. Spencer said that as part of the visit, students participated in interactive sessions with maritime experts and crew members, gaining valuable insights into safety protocols and the importance of innovation in marine operations.

He added that Carnival’s collaboration with the CMU highlights the company’s dedication to fostering educational opportunities in the region, paving the way for students to navigate their own futures in the maritime sector.

Dr. Spencer further noted that with the cruise industry increasingly prioritising safety and sustainability, the knowledge shared during the visit on the Carnival vessel plays a crucial role in shaping a responsible and skilled workforce.

The visit, which coincided with the observation of World Maritime Day on September 26, was also part of Carnival Corporation’s efforts to support maritime education and professional development in the Caribbean, while aiming to help position the region as a growing hub for cruise industry talent.
