The Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) will host its inaugural Academic Conference during the 2015 observance of Maritime Awareness Week, which runs from September 20-26.

The two-day conference, which takes place on Wednesday, September 23 and Thursday, September 24, is being held at the Jamaica Conference Centre under the theme: ‘Last Mile Logistics : Possibilities and Promise for the Caribbean’.

In an interview with JIS News, Executive Director of the CMI, Dr. Fritz Pinnock, explained that the conference is being staged through co-operation with international partners.

“It is an international academic conference that is being held in collaboration with Shanghai Maritime University in China, the SEFACIL Foundation out of France, which is a specialized logistics foundation; and the World Maritime University out of Sweden,” he said.

Dr. Pinnock added that the University of the West Indies will also feature heavily in the conference through some of the scheduled presentations, including that of James Moss-Solomon from the Mona School of Business. Also named among the list of local and international presenters are Jamaican trade expert, Patricia Francis and head of the Jamaica Public Service Co. Ltd., Kelly Tomblin.

He commended sponsors  of the conference, including Kingston Wharves Ltd.; Jamaica National Building Society; the Gleaner Company Ltd.; Lannaman and Morris Shipping; Sea Freight Jamaica Ltd; Biny Shanghai Lighting Company; Biny Caribbean Ltd.; Innovative Signs and Awnings; and D, C and S Printers.

Dr. Pinnock indicated that a book will be published at the end of the conference, capturing the highlights.
