March 31, 2012

The Full Story

The Clarendon Horticultural Society will stage its 39th annual flower show on Saturday (March 31)  and Sunday ( April 1) in the Market House at the Denbigh Showground in May Pen.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment, Damion Crawford, is expected to be the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony on Saturday, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

More than 30 vendors and plant lovers are expected to display a variety of flowers and plants over the two days under the theme: ‘A floral Salute to Jamaica.'

President of the horticultural society, Joyce Reid, told JIS News that the theme was chosen in celebration of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of Independence this year.

She said that the showroom will be decorated in the colours of the Jamaican flag – black, green and gold, while a major highlight of the event will be a display entitled: ‘50th in Flowers." There will also be demonstrations on the budding and grafting of plants and talks on landscaping and gardening, Ms. Reid added.

She informed that the funds raised will benefit disabled children in May Pen. The proceeds from last year’s show went towards the purchasing of equipment for the May Pen Hospital.

Ms. Reid said the society, which was launched some 42 years ago has grown from members visiting and admiring each others’ gardens, to now showcasing to the public, the beauty and art in the cultivation of flowers and plants.

She is encouraging Jamaicans to attend the show, which she said, will give them “a sense of appreciation” of the beauty of Jamaican flora.
