Christmas River Bridge in Portland Being Replaced as Part of Southern Coastal Highway Improvement Project (SCHIP)

Works are now underway to replace the Christmas River Bridge in Portland.

The bridge which is located along the Long Road to Manchioneal corridor is being replaced as part of works valued at over $681 – million.

Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says that the Christmas River Bridge, which is now a single lane structure, will be demolished and a two-lane bridge along with sidewalks constructed along the same alignment.

The work forms part of the Southern Coastal Highway Improvement Project (SCHIP).

Current activities include the construction of a detour road adjacent to the old structure.

The embankment of the roadway is also being excavated to facilitate the widening of the bridge.

Mr. Shaw further states that the river channel will be cleaned to increase the storm water capacity.

The approach roads will be reinstated and paved with asphaltic concrete.

The bridge work is expected to be completed by October.

During the period of works, persons who use the roadway are being asked to exercise caution and to obey the instructions of posted signs.
