China Donates $7.5 Million To Jamaica

KINGSTON, July 18 (JIS):

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, has expressed gratitude on behalf of the Government for a donation of $7.5 million from the People’s Republic of China towards Jamaica’s post-Hurricane recovery efforts.

“It’s truly an honour to receive this benevolent donation from the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China,” Senator Johnson Smith said at the handover ceremony on Tuesday (July 16) at the Ministry’s offices in downtown Kingston.

She said that the funds will aid in the restoration efforts, particularly in southern parishes where the damage to roads and agriculture was extensive.

“Many of our roads and communities, particularly those on the southern coast, which are heavily reliant on agriculture, suffered significant damage from Hurricane Beryl. This timely contribution from China will significantly enhance our efforts to rebuild and restore these areas,” she noted.

Addressing the broader implications of climate change on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Jamaica, the Minister stressed the urgent need for international action.

Senator Johnson Smith further underscored the depth and strength of the diplomatic relationship and partnership between Jamaica and China, which span more than 50 years.

In his remarks, Chinese Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Chen Daojiang, said that despite the long geographical distance, China and Jamaica remain good friends and partners “who join hands and provide each other with help”.

He noted that China has offered timely aid during the pandemic and in the aftermath of the hurricane, emphasising his country’s commitment to supporting Jamaica.
