Three charity organizations in Montego Bay have received donations totaling $500,000 from the latest cohort of Justices of the Peace (JPs) for the parish of St. James.
The charities are: The Committee for the Upliftment of the Mentally Ill (CUMI) ($210,000); The Open Heart Charitable Mission ($210, 000), and the Custos of St. James’ Charity Fund, $80,000.
The donations were presented during a ceremony at the Office of Custos of St. James, Hon. Ewan Corrodus, on Corinaldi Avenue in Montego Bay, on February 17.
Speaking on behalf of the JPs, Marline Stephenson Dalley said the idea for the donations came while the latest cohort of 33 JPs were being trained last year, adding that the money represents the surplus from the installation ceremony in December as well as donations from a number of corporate entities.
“We are pleased that as new JPs, we are able to assist the charitable organizations in achieving some of their goals of reaching out to members of our communities,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Custos thanked the JPs for their contributions to the three charities, noting that the funds will go a far way in assisting in the care and support of citizens who are in need of the services offered by CUMI, Open Heart Charitable Mission as well as the Custos’ Charity Fund.
