CEIS Broadens Regional Network

The Caribbean Energy Information Systems (CEIS) Department of the Scientific Research Council (SRC) has increased its regional network with the recent addition of The Cayman Islands.

The regional energy information network now coordinates the gathering and dissemination of energy information for 19 Caribbean countries.

Information provided assists in guiding policy decisions; creating awareness as it relates to the sustainable use of energy, and in stimulating energy conservation.

Other countries that are a part of the network include: Antigua and Barbuda, The Commonwealth of the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, The British Virgin Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, St Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The CEIS currently has the largest repository of Caribbean Energy Data. It has both technical and non-technical information in its Renewable Energy and Petroleum Statistics databases and online platforms.

The Department works alongside various Caribbean countries through ‘national focal points’, which are represented by National liaison officers. These officers are at Energy Ministries in each country and supply information for each country to the organisation.

“If you are an investor who is looking to get into any of these Caribbean countries to invest in a renewable energy project and you want to learn about the country and its status in relation to renewable energy or environmental issues affecting the Caribbean, then you may go to the CEIS website or send a request to CEIS to get this information,” Team Leader for the CEIS, Curtis Deenah, told JIS News.

The department stores petroleum statistics information from 1985 for each of the member countries of the network.

“Some of these statistics include information on energy imports, sectoral energy consumption, import costs, retail prices throughout the Caribbean as well as the usage of energy per capita,” he said.

The organisation also has renewable energy information, inclusive of the policies and legislation. Additionally, persons may get access to a directory of organisations with the expertise in the renewable energy field.

The entity has information that can be useful to Policy makers and ministries, researchers, project developers, academics as well as the general public.

Mr. Deenah said that for international project developers living outside of the region, the CEIS has a wealth of technical information and statistics that may be of interest to them.

The team leader pointed out that the CEIS has an enquiry service, where persons may send requests or enquiries and the CEIS will provide the information. Based on the information requested, the CEIS may charge customers a minimal fee.
