Nine teams, including an all girls squad, will participate in push-cart races in the Child Development Agency’s (CDA) 5K Run/Walk and Push Kart Derby on Sunday, October 19, on Knutsford Boulevard, in New Kingston.

The event, a major activity of the CDA 10th anniversary celebration, is part of efforts to raise funds for a Residential Therapeutic Centre to provide care for children who have suffered emotional trauma due to abuse.

It will kick off at 6:30 a.m. with a warm up session and will officially start at 7:00 a.m. near the Spanish Court Hotel on Trafalgar Road, in Kingston.

Research and Development Manager at the CDA, Randell Bailey, told JIS News that the teams will include children from State care and family re-integration programmes.

“Each team will have a maximum of four persons and one is an all girls team that was assembled specifically for this event. The other eight teams are boys across different age groups,” he said, adding that the age groups will be from 12 to 14 and 15 to 17.

Mr. Bailey said the agency decided to include the Push Kart Derby, “to get the children involved and to give them some exposure and to enjoy a once in a lifetime experience.”

He noted that team members have been assisting in the construction of the push carts. The push kart derby, which will begin after the 5K Run/Walk, will start at the top of Knutsford Boulevard, near the National Commercial Bank (NCB).

The Manager appealed to persons to come out and watch the children participate in the push cart races. “We want persons to cheer them on, encouraging them, sharing the time with them,” he added.

He also encouraged members of the public to show their support by participating in the 5K Run/Walk.

“We know that the time is short for persons to sign up. The deadline is October 16, but if there are persons who really want to  be a part of it, they  can contact us and we will always see how best we can include them,” he added.

For additional details on how to sign up, persons are encouraged to visit www.ondirun.com, or email cda5k2014@gmail.com or call 874-2705/849-1080.
