The Full Story

The Child Development Agency (CDA) will host its 11th Annual Candlelight Vigil and Concert on Saturday (November 19) at Emancipation Park, New Kingston.

The event, which is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m., will be staged under the theme ‘The Cries of Our Children’. It is in observance of World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse.

Public Relations and Communications Manager at the CDA, Rochelle Dixon, told JIS News during an interview, that the vigil is aimed at uniting the country around the protection of the nation’s children.

“So, this is a call to action. We want the mothers, fathers, guardians, aunts, uncles, everybody in all the different sectors of Jamaica to join forces to help reduce the unfortunate incidents that have been happening to our children,” she said.

In outlining the activities for the evening, Miss Dixon said a children’s village will be mounted, which will showcase the talents of children in art and craft.

The village will include conversation corners with representatives from child-protection agencies, a play therapy area, and child-friendly companies offering their products for sampling.

The Manning’s Boys’ Home Marching Band will lead 67 children in a march from Richmond Avenue off Half-Way-Tree Road to Emancipation Park. The 67 children will represent each child who lost his/her life due to violence over the period October 2015 to October 2016.

“They will all hold a placard displaying the name and age of each child, and they will also be accompanied by adults holding ‘stop the abuse’ placards. We want this to be a showstopper; we want to get the attention of persons as to what is going on,” Miss Dixon said.

The highlight of the evening will be the cracking of glow sticks and a moment of silence, which will be observed for the children who died under tragic circumstances.

The evening’s entertainment will include performances from St. Hugh’s High School, RJR Citizens’ Advice Bureau Basic School, Clan Carty Primary School, Constant Spring Primary and Junior

High, Kingsway Preparatory School, and Lister Mair/Gilby High School for the Deaf.

Other performances will come from gospel and secular artistes such as Rondell Positive, Randy McLauren, Jermaine Richards, Kevin Downswell, Carey Sayles, Taurus Riley and Da Vinci.

State Minister in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Hon. Floyd Green will be the keynote speaker. A number of stakeholders and funding agencies are also expected to participate in the event.

These include the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Office of the Children’s Registry (OCR), Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA), National Parenting Support Commission (NPSC), and the Office of the Children’s Advocate (OCA).
