The pieces were done for the youngsters’ ‘Culture Corner’, during their ‘Culture Day’ activity at the Centre on Tuesday (July 30). The programme, which commenced in 1999, is an annual initiative geared towards extending assistance, through academics and other interventions, to students residing in Papine and adjacent communities in St. Andrew. This year’s programme was facilitated by organisers from the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTechJa) Students’ Union Council in tandem with the JIS, under the theme ‘Empower to Inspire: Nurturing Tomorrow’s Leaders’.

Looking on is Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, Marsha Henry-Smith. Mr. Tanaka and other JICA officials were updated during the visit on the Improvement of Emergency Communication System Project in Jamaica, a collaborative effort between ODPEM and the Agency.

The presentation was made during a ceremony at the National Irrigation Commission’s (NIC) Newport/Duff House Office in Manchester on Wednesday (July 31). The fertiliser was part of a batch donated by Newport Fersan Jamaica Limited in support of the Government’s post-hurricane recovery efforts. The brick building was constructed in 1865 – the same year as the Morant Bay Rebellion – when the original Church situated at Church Corner was abandoned because of dilapidation. The east wall of the Church has a brick with the date 1865 baked into it.
