August 30, 2006The Full Story
The second annual Caribbean Showcase was held in Hyde Park, London on August 26, with a special tribute to Jamaica’s late cultural icon Louise Bennett Coverley (Miss Lou).
Broadcaster Fae Ellington, who attended the event, spoke of Miss Lou’s impact in gaining acceptance for Jamaican patois and culture across the world. She said Miss Lou influenced the work of many Jamaican and Caribbean artistes and musicians, including reggae icon, Bob Marley.
There was also an audio visual presentation of Miss Lou singing ‘Chi Chi Bud Oh’, and performing ‘No Lickle Twang’.
Caribbean Showcase is a free one-day festival celebrating London’s Caribbean communities and their contribution to the capital.
Much like the Notting Hill Carnival, the event provides a culturally rich, vibrant and family-friendly environment for everyone to enjoy London’s carnival season.
The activities at the Caribbean Showcase included soca and salsa dance classes, traditional story telling, carnival costume making classes, plus an interactive carnival exhibition. There were arts and crafts on display and a food village serving Caribbean dishes.
Among the highlights were performances by Kymani Marley, who paid tribute to his father, the late Bob Marley; Calypsonian Alison Hinds; award winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch and Ms. Dynamite.
