During Thursday afternoon’s session of the special meeting of the Cabinet, Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, brought news of the passing of one of the era’s greatest Freedom Fighters, Hon. Nelson Mandela.

Members of the Cabinet and attending public officers immediately observed a period of silence in memory of this great friend of all who cherish freedom and equality.

Education Minister, Rev. Ronald Thwaites offered prayers of thanksgiving to God for Mandela’s generosity of spirit, his long-suffering life, his willingness to forgive and his selfless commitment to human advancement.

Prayers were said for Mr. Mandela’s family, the South African people and for courage and strength for all those whose life had been made richer by Nelson Mandela’s example.
