The Full Story

Cabinet this morning (Aug.18) hailed as magnificent and spectacular, the performances by Jamaican athletes Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser, Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart, who captured gold and silver medals in the men’s and women’s 100m finals at the 29th Olympiad in Beijing, China.
Their historic victory demonstrated the resilience, determination and strength of the Jamaican spirit.
Cabinet also commended the overall performance of the Jamaican team, its coaching staff and officials for their hard work and wished them well in their continued quest for glory. The Cabinet was optimistic that the team would reap more medals for Jamaica before the Games are over.
The Jamaican athletes created history in the men’s and women’s 100m finals in Beijing on the weekend when they captured both events, a first in Jamaica’s track and field history. It was also the first time that gold and two silver medals have been presented in an Olympic sprint event resulting from the dead heat for 2nd place between Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart in the women’s 100m finals.
The Cabinet noted with particular delight the fact that the Jamaican athletes who have so far captured the coveted Olympic events are locally based and trained.
