Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz, has informed that Cabinet has approved the adoption of the National Plant Health Policy.
“This policy seeks to address the gaps and failures in the current plant health system, in light of the requirements of international treaties and agreements, of which Jamaica is a signatory, and food safety standards of major trading partners,” Mr. Vaz explained.
The Minister was speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing, held at Jamaica House on July 28.
Mr. Vaz pointed out that the policy identifies the issues that hinder the development of an efficient plant health system and makes provision for the revision of existing legislations, building of institutional capacity, scientific systems, quarantine capacity, surveillance systems, emergency response for pest outbreaks and increased public awareness.
On another matter, Cabinet approved members to the Board of the Firearms Licensing Authority for a period of three years. The members are: Chairman, Errol Strong; Deputy Chairman, Justice Marva McIntosh; Khaleel Michael Azan, Lincoln Allen and Herbert Hamilton.
