Eligible civil society organisations (CSOs) and grassroots businesses can now apply for grant funding from the Social Development Commission (SDC), during its Call for Proposals period of September 28 to October 30.
Grants available to CSOs include the Local Economic Development Grant, Government of Jamaica Community Development Committee Grant, and the Government of Jamaica Parish Development Committee Grant.
This year, the SDC has increased funds allocated to the Local Economic Development Grant with successful applicants being able to receive a maximum amount of $25,000.00 each. This represents an increase of 60 per cent being offered to community-based enterprises across Jamaica.
“The increase in the grant comes as part of the GOJ’s thrust, through the SDC, to aid grassroots-based community businesses to better equip and expand their enterprises. The grant may be accessed and used to fund capacity building, procurement of inputs for business expansion, marketing and business registration. The ultimate focus of the Local Economic Development Grant is to bolster employment at the community level,” Director of Local Economic Development at the SDC, Avril Ranger, told JIS News.
Eligible enterprises must be in existence for more than 12 months and identified on the SDC’s Local Economic Initiative (LEI) listing as at September 2020. The CSOs may also be associated with any of the local governance bodies within its parish.
“The Local Economic Initiative may be owned and operated by the Community Development Committee, the Development Area Committee or the Parish Development Committee or, additionally, the Local Economic Initiative may be affiliated to any of the local governance structures aforementioned,” the Director said.
The Local Economic Development Grant is being funded by the Government of Jamaica for Financial Year 2020/2021.
Copies of the application form, information sheets and additional information may be obtained at the SDC parish offices or on the SDC’s website at www.sdc.gov.jm.
