The Full Story

Beneficiaries of the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP) have been empowered to break intergenerational hardship, says Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness.

Speaking after he handed over three NSHP houses to families in Clarendon North Central recently, Mr. Holness said his Administration is committed to delivering the houses to people “wherever they are”.

“This house will help to break intergenerational poverty, so we consider it an investment in your household too, to ensure that you can fulfil your own dreams and aspirations. Your children and grandchildren can get a good education, and they can use this as a launching pad for the rest of their lives,” he said, at Beckford Kraal, where he handed over one of the houses.

Mr. Holness reported that 197 of the houses have been built and delivered, and they expect to surpass the 200 that have been earmarked for construction during the current fiscal year.

“We will then move to our new target of building 500 houses,” the Prime Minister said.

Mr. Holness noted that budgeting for the houses has been done and allocations made, and “we will get it done”.

“We now have the capacity to do it, and we are increasing the speed at which we are doing construction,” the Prime Minister said.

Mr. Holness said moving a family of four, with a single mother, out of a small shed in the constituency, and placing them in a well-built home was “probably the most rewarding of my political career”.

Calling on beneficiaries of the NSHP to be model citizens in their communities, Mr. Holness said while they have received the houses free, the units have been financed by people who pay taxes.

“The taxpayers of Jamaica, all the people who contribute to the NHT (National Housing Trust), and people who make other kinds of contributions, all have a role in this house being built, so you bear an obligation to the entire Jamaica. If you get support from the Government’s social safety net, you must make the best of it. We want you to be an example of hope to others who have not had the opportunity to benefit from this,” he said.

Operating under the Housing, Opportunity, Production and Employment Programme (HOPE), through the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, the NSHP is geared at improving the housing condition of the country’s most needy population.
