Renowned Jamaican author and publisher, Joanne Simpson, has donated copies of her recent publication, ‘Why Heritage?’ to the Jamaica Information Service (JIS).

The books were presented on May 4 at the agency’s Kingston office and represent a partnership between the two entities – JIS and the publishers, Trailblazers INK – in showcasing the nation’s rich history and culture.

Ms. Simpson said the partnership was a natural fit as she and the JIS share similar objectives.  “We have the same mission in terms of educating the people. I work very closely with the JIS in my publications and I thought we could work together to get it to the wide market, across the island and the Diaspora,” she explained.

She pointed out that the recently revised book is noteworthy, as it puts into context the importance of our past.  “The research took me to new frontiers of our history from slavery to fifty years of independence which I am happy to share with readers.  The work highlights the links with our past and provides a better understanding of the role it plays in our everyday lives and its impact on our future,” she said.

“Why do we have a style, why do we have a music and collective art? It is all explained in this book. The information is important…and it is not difficult or complex, so it has a wide appeal,” she reasoned while adding, “I have sought to make this the most comprehensive and affordable manual on Jamaica’s national heritage.”

Ms. Simpson noted that the revision of the book, first published in 2002 and updated in 2009, became necessary, as there have been a number of events in Jamaica which have had significant impact in recent years.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the JIS, Donna-Marie Rowe, expressed appreciation for the contribution and the strength of the partnership.

“JIS is pleased to facilitate the revision of this well researched and useful publication. This partnership will allow the agency to utilize content which has been produced by an experienced and successful Jamaican author, especially as we interact with children during Child Month,” the CEO said.

“The material is easy to read, colourful and relevant not only to our young audience but to anyone interested in learning more about Jamaica,” Mrs. Rowe said.  “It is indeed a valuable resource,” she emphasized.

Printed in Jamaica, ‘Why Heritage?’ covers a range of topics including: Government and Security, Symbols of Nationhood, National Heroes, Heads of State, Culture, Places of interest, Culinary Delights and Sports Legacy.
