Attorney-at-Law, Sophia Frazer-Binns has been appointed Government Senator, to fill the vacancy arising from the resignation of former Senate President, Rev. Stanley Redwood.

In accepting her appointment, during a sitting of the Upper House today (May 17), Ms. Frazer-Binns expressed gratitude to Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller for the confidence “she has reposed in me”.

“It is my desire that I shall do everything within my power to ensure that such confidence is never betrayed,” she stated.

The Westwood High school graduate also committed to serving her country and her people with great conviction.

Leader of Government Business and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. A.J. Nicholson, welcomed Ms. Binns to the Upper House, noting that her appointment is quite significant. “This is the first time in the country’s history that we are having six females in the Senate,” he stated.

“What we are witnessing today is history in the making and we intend to make this Senate a historic (one),” he added.

Ms. Frazer–Binns holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of the West Indies; a Certificate in Legal Education from the Norman Manley Law School; and a Master of Law Degree in Entertainment from the University of Westminster, London.

She has been involved in mediation and dispute resolution efforts as well as youth and community outreach.

She previously served at the Kingston Legal Aid Clinic, the Office of The Children’s Advocate and the Land Administration and Management Programme.
