The Full Story

Beginning next week, the Government will be providing greenhouse farmers with critical supplies and materials to help them rebuild, following the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 3.

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, made the announcement while providing an update on the ongoing Hurricane Beryl Recovery Programme, during the sitting of the House of Representatives on September 24.

“Recognising the importance of protected agriculture, we have already procured $27 million worth of material, including plastic, antiviral netting and shade cloth,” he said.

Mr. Green informed that distribution will take place for farmers in the hardest-hit parishes.

The Minister further noted that an additional $55 million is currently in procurement for additional material.

“Already, 35 greenhouse farmers have benefited from 1,250 bags of fertiliser, potting mix and vegetable seeds,” he said.

He further disclosed that the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) has committed $3.1 million of greenhouse materials, bolstering the Government’s efforts in this crucial area.
