The Full Story

Approximately 17,130 persons are registered with the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities (JCPD).

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., said this marks a positive step towards formal recognition and support for these clients.

“I want to use this medium to encourage all persons with disabilities to register with the JCPD by downloading the forms from the website, www.jcpd.gov.jm, or collecting a form across the parishes at our local offices or at the JCPD head office,” he said.

“It is important for us to know who the person with a disability is, where they are and what are their circumstances so that we are able to facilitate support, particularly in times of disasters, to know how to allocate resources,” Minister Charles added.

He was speaking during a statement to the House of Representatives on Tuesday (February 11).

Mr. Charles also informed that the Ministry has developed the ‘I am Able’ initiative, which is a national public education campaign to advance the rights of persons with disabilities.

He said the initiative is intended to promote the capabilities of persons with disabilities and improve access, inclusivity and integration of physically challenged individuals across all aspects of life.

“The campaign is meant to be an empowering programme, designed ultimately to create a society where people of all abilities are valued, respected and empowered,” Mr. Charles said.

The Minister also acknowledged the inclusion of the International Symbol of Access (ISA) on National Identification System (NIDS) cards, enhancing identification for persons with disabilities.

Additionally, under a partnership with the Operation Birthright Programme, 6,000 persons with disabilities can now receive free birth certificates, ensuring legal recognition and rights for the disabled.
