The Full Story

The Scientific Research Council (SRC) is now accepting applications for its annual National Young Inventors and Innovators Pitch Competition (YIIC).

Students at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels can submit entries online up to January 26 using the link provided on the SRC’s social media platforms.

The annual contest is scheduled for February 27 where shortlisted participants will present innovative business ideas to a panel of judges. The theme for this year is, ‘Youth-Centred Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development’.

Technical Information Officer, Leigia Hall, told JIS News that the competition forms part of the SRC’s efforts to popularise science and technology.

Students are invited to come up with project ideas that inspire economic development without depleting the country’s natural resources.

“YIIC is not just targeting innovation; we are encouraging students to not just be employees but also employers… and to be a part of propelling Jamaica towards First-World status,” Ms. Hall said.

Prizes will be awarded for Best Overall Pitch, Best Overall Innovation, Best Commercial Innovation, Best Agriculture Innovation, Best Use of Technology, and Best Youth Impact Innovation.

Top entrants will also receive electronic gadgets, gift vouchers and other items.

“We are also partnering with business development organisations and entrepreneurs to give the students product development support and seed funding for their ideas,” Ms. Hall told JIS News.

All the participants will have the opportunity to showcase their projects at the National Science Fair to be held on March 26.
