The Full Story

Fans of the Lauriston/Thompson Pen Community 4-H Club’s annual stew festival will have lots to enjoy when the event returns for its 17th staging on November 4.

Founder/Leader of the Club, Shian Christie, told JIS News that the usual array of “stewed everything” will be back for patrons with the addition of brand-new menu items.

“What is new and exciting for our 17th staging is our new stewed breadfruit and our new stewed cassava. Last year we tried our stewed egg and this year we will continue with it,” he said.

Other dishes patrons can look forward to include stewed rabbit, stewed pear, stewed ackee, and stewed mango. There will also be a live demonstration of a whole pig being roasted.

More than 50 government and private sector entities are confirmed for the event and will set up displays on location at the usual home of the event – Brooklyn Park in Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

Hailed as Jamaica’s premier community 4-H Club, the Lauriston/Thompson Pen family use the event as an opportunity to raise funds to support the educational pursuits of its members as well as its annual back-to-school treat in August.

“This is young people coming together to put on this type of show. It’s all about young people – male and female. The funds are used to assist them to pay for their CXC’s and to go to school. Over the years we have been successful and we have gained a lot from this,” Mr. Christie said.

The event promises to be exciting, with a concert package, marching band, giveaways, farmers’ market and cookoff.

There will also be free HIV testing, health checks, and Legal Aid Council services, among other offerings.

The activities kick off at 9:00 a.m. and run until 5:00 p.m.

Admission is free.
