The Full Story

In a display of community recognition, Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States (US), Her Excellency Audrey Marks, has extended warm congratulations to Salome Ogilvie, who lived in the US for many years, on the occasion of her 80th birthday.

The Ambassador’s tribute was presented to Mrs. Ogilvie at her special birthday celebration held on August 10 at the Sea Gardens Beach Resort in Montego Bay, St. James.

The celebration was a joyous family affair, with the octogenarian surrounded by her children Celia, Clive, Judith, Andrew and Sandra; grandchildren; great-grandchildren, and other relatives.

The gesture from the Ambassador highlights the nation’s appreciation for the contribution of its citizens, including those living overseas.

In her tribute, Ambassador Marks said that Mrs. Ogilvie, who was born in Mandeville, Manchester on August 10, 1944, is “a testament to the resilience, determination, and strength that exemplify the Jamaican spirit.”

Despite facing early adversities, including the loss of her mother at a young age, she persevered and built a life of meaning and purpose, marrying Justin in 1965 and raising a family.

Along the way, she had the support of her sister Pearl and brother-in-law Harvey.

Mrs. Ogilvie pursued a career in insurance sales before migrating to the US.

She worked multiple jobs as a housekeeper to support her family, which joined her in the US in 1985. She purchased a home in East Orange, New Jersey and lived in the US for several years before retiring to Mandeville.

Ambassador Marks said Mrs. Ogilvie’s life story embodies “the very best of what it means to be Jamaican – resilient, hardworking, family-oriented, and always striving for better.”

The Ambassador said that Mrs. Ogilvie’s journey has not only benefited her own family but has also contributed to the rich tapestry of the Jamaican diaspora in the US.

As Mrs. Ogilvie celebrates this milestone birthday, her story stands as a powerful reminder of the impact that individual members of diaspora communities can have, and the enduring connection between Jamaica and its citizens around the world.
