‘Art Off The Main’ the African, Caribbean and Latin American art fair, returns to the Puck Building in New York City for four days next month.
The annual exposition, which will be held from October 4 to 7, will provide curators, seasoned collectors and novices, the opportunity to view and collect paintings, sculpture, photography and original prints by established and emerging artists from more than 20 countries in the three regions.
According to Jamaican Loris Crawford, the show’s executive producer, “Art Off the Main fills an important niche in the art fair market”.
He noted that “while there has been a recent surge in gallery and museum shows featuring contemporary African, Caribbean and Latin American art, and record auction values in the world’s art capitals, the works of art produced by these artists are still underrepresented in the United States. Art Off The Main provides a much-needed annual platform for exposure”.
The fourth annual fair opens at 6:00 p.m. on October 4 with gala reception, with proceeds to benefit the Museum for African Art, which is dedicated to interpreting the art and culture of Africa and the African Diaspora for a global audience.
Friday, October 5 will be the ‘Paint It Pink’ cocktail reception, to raise awareness of breast cancer in young women of colour, which is a major public health issue in the United States. Ticket sales benefit the diversity programme of Young Survival Coalition, a community of young breast cancer survivors seeking to educate the public on the issue of breast cancer in women 40 years old and under. Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7, are general admission days.
Continuing the tradition of creating greater awareness and knowledge of art from the featured regions, Art Off The Main’s 2007 programme will include an educational series, sponsored by New York University’s Association of Black Faculty, Administrators and Staff, with ticket sales to go towards a scholarship fund for university students.
