Advisory to Crop and Livestock Farmers for Severe Weather and Heavy Rainfall Preparedness

The Meteorological Services has issued latest Severe Weather Alert effective until 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2025. In the event that conditions become favorable for the development of a Tropical Storm or Cyclone, the RADA is advising farmers to make necessary preparations for minimizing impacts of flooding and wind damage. These include the following:
Advisory to Crop Farmers
o Clear drains to allow free flow of water to prevent flooding and stagnation following
o Harvest crops where practical
o Check your surroundings and buildings for danger of fallen trees and electrical wires
o Repair /service tools & equipment which might be used after event
o Have sufficient stock of pesticides and seeds
o Stock adequate quantities of fungicides where you have plants that are susceptible to fungal/ bacterial diseases and are likely to need treatments after event.
o Have a secure, dry area protected from wind/rain and away from animals, food/feed and persons.
o Greenhouse farmers: In the event of high winds, be prepared to remove
cladding, lay plants flat and cover with plastic sheeting held down by twine tied across house posts
o Plan to establish protected seedling production centers for early replanting
Advisory to Livestock Farmers
o Keep an identification tag on your livestock at all times
o Be prepared to move animal to a higher ground. In the event of flooding, to free animals, so they can swim to safety.
o Make provisions for enough livestock feed and clean water for at least a week
o Keep a one-month supply on hand of medications and livestock supplements.
o Make sure housing, food, and supplies for small animals such as chickens and rabbits are storm ready and able to withstand high winds and rising water.
o Smaller animals can be brought indoors if necessary.
o Build temporary pens in a garage.
o Have a secure, dry area protected from wind/rain and away from animals, food/ feed and persons
Farmers, protect your livelihood and property.
Advisory to Banana and Plantain Farmers
o Clear drains to allow free flow of water to prevent flooding and stagnation following.
o Trim trees that may pose a threat to the plantation
o Carry out a rigid Propping programme preferably with Bamboo to reduce toppling.
o Carry out deep harvesting of bunches available where practical
o Carry out fungicide application for Sigatoka management
o Ensure fertilizers and Pesticides are stored above ground on pallets or shelves as applicable.
o Carry out extensive propping with bamboo to reduce toppling of plants with bunches
Farmers are also urged to pay keen attention to bulletins or alerts from the Jamaica Meteorological Services.
