The Full Story

An additional 7,000 Jamaica Public Service (JPS) customers will have their power reinstated over the next two weeks, says the company’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Hugh Grant.

“This will reduce the number of customers without power to fewer than 10,000 by the end of February,” he said.

Mr. Grant was addressing Wednesday’s (February 11) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, where he gave an update on the JPS restoration efforts following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

He informed that 95 per cent of customers without power are primarily in the parishes of Westmoreland and St. Elizabeth.

“Our target is to have customers in those parishes who are able to receive service to have access to the grid between March and April of 2026,” Mr. Grant indicated.

“I want to emphasise the ability to receive service because based on surveys we have done and through partnership with the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), we have identified that approximately 40 per cent of the remaining customers are not yet ready to receive power due to damage to their property and electrical infrastructure,” he said.

He noted that electricity cannot be restored safely until those issues are addressed.

“The good news is we are working closely with JSIF and community partners to connect customers once their premises are ready,” Mr. Grant said.

He pledged the company’s commitment to restoring power to the approximately 17,000 customers who remain without power.

“To the 9,341 customers in Westmoreland, the 6,370 customers in St. Elizabeth, the 780 customers in St. James, and the 253 customers in Hanover, we see you, we hear you, we care about you and we want to assure each and every one of you that the work will not stop until every light is back on,” Mr. Grant said.
