Earthquake Awareness Week activities began in Portland on Sunday, January 8 with a church service at the Port Antonio New Testament Church of God in Jamaica.
To be held under the theme: ‘Prepare Now! Don’t Wait.Be Ready for the Next Earthquake’, the events have been planned by the Portland Disaster Committee and include educational talks and earthquake drills in a number of school in the parish.
Director of Administration at the Portland Parish Council, Faye Neufville told JIS News that the major objective of the activities was the sensitisation of the people of the parish about the dangers of earthquakes and the importance of being prepared, in order to mitigate the dislocations that could result.
She noted that the educational talks to be conducted in schools would provide information to the students about earthquakes and the impact they could create when they struck, adding that specific reference would be made to the history of earthquake occurrences in Jamaica, and the damage which resulted.
Mrs. Neufville pointed out that the schools at which the educational talks and earthquake drills would be conducted are Manchioneal All-age, Ken Wright Primary and Orange Bay Primary.
She said those schools were selected because they were not among institutions that benefited from similar activities during earthquake awareness week last year. Earthquake Awareness Week is being observed from January 8 -13.
