Several activities will highlight the 40th anniversary of the National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC).

The events were presented during the press launch of the NCSC’s 40th anniversary on May 11. The theme for this year’s celebration is: ‘Showcasing our Legacy, Promoting Intergenerational Solidarity’.

The year-long activities will commence with the Centenarians’ Day Award Ceremony on Friday, May 20 at the Church of God in Jamaica, 93b Constant Spring Road, commencing at 11:00 a.m. Centenarians from all parishes will be honoured at the event.

On Sunday, May 22, there will be the 40th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service at Church of the Open Bible, Washington Boulevard, beginning at 10:15 a.m.

There will be the observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day  on Wednesday, June 15. A road march is scheduled for St. James to increase awareness of the day.

From June 1 to July 31 the Council, in collaboration with the Small Business Association of Jamaica, the Rural Agricultural Development Authority and the Jamaica Business Development Corporation will host a series of Parish Art and Craft and Culinary Assessment Income Security Workshops.

The workshops will provide information to seniors on branding, packaging and  small business management.

In line with its mantra to promote active ageing, the Council will have its Regional Sports Days throughout the month of July, sponsored by the National Health Fund.

Persons 18 to 50 years of age will benefit from the NCSC’s retirement planning seminars in August, aimed at encouraging persons to make the necessary preparations before they retire.

Senior Citizens Month, observed from September 25  to October 3, will see several special activities being undertaken, including Grandparents’ Day; National Awards Ceremony, to honour outstanding seniors, volunteers and trailblazers; International Day of Older Persons; and a National Craft and Trade Show.

The rest of the year will feature other events by the Council, such as its National Schools Debate Competition; National Domino Competition; National Seniors Bible Quiz Competition; and its Brilliante Culture Festival.
