Olypmic Cyclist Ricardo Lynch is New Face of Energy Conservation Campaign

Minister of Energy, Clive Mullings, has expressed delight at the decision by the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ), to name Olympic cyclist, Ricardo Lynch, as the face of their Energy Conservation Campaign.
“We are very happy to have Ricardo as the face of conservation and energy, he epitomises what we need in this country, and he epitomises the fact that we can beat the world and solve our problems in one sweep,” Minister of Energy, Clive Mullings, stated at the recent signing of the Energy Conservation Contract, at the PCJ Building.
“Ricardo represents the values that we should extol in our young people and we will put forward his image and voice for conservation and energy in Jamaica,” he further stated, adding “not many people realise that so much energy is put out by this young man that he can literally light up a light bulb”.
At the 2008 Olympic Games in China, Ricardo Lynch, became the first Jamaican cyclist in 16 years to compete at an Olympics. He represented the country in the Kierin, an eight-lap event, which covers 2,000 metres on a 250-metre track. Mr. Lynch, who placed 17th out of 25 competitors, has promised to return to the Olympics in 2012 and do an even better job.
“I want to express my thanks and appreciation for the confidence that was demonstrated in my ability to take home a medal for Jamaica, which was not possible at this time but I promise you in 2012, I will do everything in my power to bring this home,” he passionately expressed.
Echoing the Minister’s sentiments of the appropriateness of having Mr. Lynch on board as an ambassador for energy, was Group Managing Director at the PCJ, Dr. Ruth Potopsingh, who stated that she was very excited at the prospects of what can be achieved through the partnership.
“The PCJ has had a programme of energy efficiency and conservation for a number of years but we have always doubted the impact of this programme but with Ricardo Lynch, joining us as the face of energy conservation, I am confident that we are going to see an upsurge in the effects that we see from our programmes,” she noted.
“Ricardo represents the youth. He is a good role model for our country and he has sound ethical values which we will be promoting,” she added.
The 23-year-old cyclist had a successful 2008 season, capturing a silver Medal at the World Cup in Denmark and a Gold Medal at the Moscow Grand Prix. Cycling is the only other sport apart from track and field in which Jamaica has medalled at an Olympic games.
