G.C. Foster College Could Become a Sport University

The possibility of transforming the Spanish Town based G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport into a Sport University is being explored, Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, has said.

The institution, the Minister said, would have expanded expertise in competitive and recreational sporting activities, and that within the “next few years G.C. Foster can become the Jamaica sport university.”

Rev. Thwaites argued that the College can become a foreign exchange earner by attracting people to the island who want to learn about the country’s prowess in the area of athletics.

The Minister was speaking at the re-commissioning of the gymnasium at the college, on March 28.  Upgrading work was done at a cost of $14 million, and included replacing the roof and other infrastructure repairs.

Rev. Thwaites said the college could also look at training nurses and other professionals who are engaged in wellness activities, “becoming a centre for physical and emotional wellness, and for the promotion of wholesome lifestyles.”

In a message read by Senior Advisor to the Education Minister, Dr. Franklin Johnston, Minister with responsibility for Sport, Hon. Natalie Neita Headley, said the Government’s commitment to sport is best exemplified in the ongoing development of the college.

“The re-commissioned gymnasium  is just what we need – a first world facility that will inspire first world performances,” the Minister said.
