The National Youth Council of Jamaica (NYCJ), which represents community youth groups across Jamaica, held its national elections over the weekend and elected a new executive to lead the organisation for the next two years. Nacadian Jones of the Burnt Ground Youth Club in St. Elizabeth, was on Saturday, November 30, 2013 elected as the new Chairman of the NCYJ. Jones, who has served in the past as 2nd Deputy and 1st Deputy Chairman, was elected at the Marcus Garvey Technical High School, in a process administered by the Electoral Office of Jamaica.
In taking the oath of office, Mr. Jones told the representatives of the more than over 300 community-based youth organisations in attendance, that he was committed to being a voice of change and action for young people across Jamaica and to advancing the work of the Council.
“The NYCJ and its member organizations are powerful tools for preventing and addressing the social ills we face as a country,” the new chairman said.
The Youth Council’s national executive, which is elected for a period of two years, also comprises 1st Deputy Chairman, Jermaine Porter of the Santa Cruz Police Youth Club in St. Elizabeth; 2nd Deputy Chairman, Jelene-Ann Brown from the St. Ann’s Bay Police Youth Club; General Secretary Shevauni Powell who represents the group Young Women and Men of Purpose from Manchester; while past Prime Minister’s Youth Award nominee, Kenneth Gordon of the Eleven Miles Youth Club in Bull Bay was named Public Relations Officer; and Christopher Wilson from the Vineyard Town Youth Club in Kingston was uncontested as the Financial Controller.
In Saturday’s elections, the parish executive bodies of the youth council were also installed.
Meanwhile, 2nd Deputy Chairman for the National Youth Council, Jelene-Ann Brown departed Jamaica on Monday, December 3 to represent Jamaican youth at the 3rd Caribbean Youth Leaders Summit in St. Lucia. The Summit seeks to finalize all matters relating to the establishment and launch of the Caribbean Regional Youth Council (CRYC).
