The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) is reporting that the country’s health sector recorded notable milestones during the 2024 calendar year, even as it grappled with a range of significant challenges.
Outlined in the Institute’s latest Economic and Social Survey Jamaica (ESSJ), which provides a comprehensive assessment of national development, the agency says the Government continued to invest in several critical priority areas, aimed at improving population health outcomes and boosting system efficiency.
These investments targeted maternal health, mental health services, vaccination programmes, sexual and reproductive health, and the strengthening of human resources within the sector.
The report also highlighted the growing role of evidence-based research and the digital transformation of healthcare delivery.
These initiatives, the PIOJ noted, are designed to modernise the health system, enhance patient care, and improve access to services across the island.
Despite these gains, the sector faced major setbacks, most notably the impact of Hurricane Beryl.
The hurricane caused extensive damage to more than 130 healthcare facilities, resulting in estimated losses of approximately $3.9 billion and placing additional strain on already stretched resources.
Another persistent challenge identified in the report is the out-migration of healthcare professionals, particularly nurses.
This trend has negatively affected service delivery, leading to staffing shortages and increased pressure on remaining personnel within the public health system.
In response, the Government introduced measures aimed at retaining and attracting healthcare workers.
These include a $2.5-billion scholarship programme and proposals for flexible work contracts, both of which are intended to mitigate workforce losses and stabilise the sector.
The ESSJ, the PIOJ said, remains an indispensable resource for understanding Jamaica’s economic, social, and environmental performance.
It offers detailed data and analysis on macroeconomy, sustainable development, human development, demographics, and the labour market, all within the framework of national planning.
The 2025 edition continues to align its analysis with the goals of Vision 2030 Jamaica – National Development Plan and the Medium-Term Socio-Economic Policy Framework.
The PIOJ emphasised that the report supports a wide range of stakeholders by balancing broad national coverage with focused insights into key areas shaping Jamaica’s evolving socio-economic landscape.
