The Full Story

Residents of St. Thomas are being urged to take advantage of a three-month building amnesty being offered by the municipal corporation to regularise their structures to avoid legal action.

Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation, Kevin McIndoe, told JIS News that the amnesty will run from April 1 to June 30, and during that time, the surcharge penalty associated with unregularised structures will be waived.

The amnesty is for people who erected new structures or additions to their homes within the past 10 years but did not submit the required building plans and supporting documents to the municipal corporation.

“To get regularised, they must submit the appropriate building plans and supporting documents to the municipal corporation,” Mr. McIndoe said.

He informed that the surcharge penalty for unregularised structures is 50 per cent of the cost of the building.
