Principal Director at the Bureau of Gender Affairs (BGA), Sharon Coburn Robinson, has hailed the Jamaica Household Workers Union (JHWU) as a leading force in advancing the rights, recognition and development of household workers in Jamaica and beyond.
Speaking at the union’s 35th anniversary thanksgiving service held recently at Eastwood Park New Testament Church of God in Kingston, Mrs. Coburn Robinson said the milestone theme: ‘35 Years of Strength, Dignity and Solidarity’, reflects the organisation’s enduring influence.
“It is therefore a celebration of purpose, perseverance and immense possibilities,” she said.
Mrs. Coburn Robinson noted that household workers play a critical yet often under-recognised role in national development, contributing through caregiving, household management and other essential services that support families and communities.
She commended members of the JHWU for their resilience and resourcefulness, noting that many have diversified their skills and continue to expand their professional capacity beyond traditional roles.
“The union is one of the most successful… groups in Jamaica and the Caribbean region,” she said, adding that its leadership has positively impacted countless individuals locally and across the diaspora.
The Principal Director also highlighted the organisation’s growing reach, noting that its advocacy model has influenced similar movements across the Caribbean and internationally.
She underscored the role of the Bureau of Gender Affairs in supporting domestic workers through policy and legislative reforms, including the Sexual Harassment (Protection and Prevention) Act, which provides specific protections for household workers.
Mrs. Coburn Robinson noted that the law recognises the unique vulnerabilities faced by domestic workers, particularly as their workplace is often within private homes.
She affirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening protections and creating safe, enabling environments for all workers.
“While we celebrate the outstanding achievements of the leadership and members of the union, we renew our commitment to be relentless in our advocacy to ensure that the work of empowerment continues unabated,” she said.
Mrs. Coburn Robinson said that the JHWU’s achievements stand as a testament to the power of collective action and sustained advocacy in driving social change.
