Hundreds of patrons came together in the spirt of friendship, joy and unity on Sunday (March 8) as the Indian community in Jamaica celebrated Holi – the festival of colours.
The annual event was organised by the Indian High Commission with the support of Indian Cultural Society in Jamaica.
Festival goers danced and sang as they covered each other with vibrantly coloured powder to mark the arrival of spring, the victory of good over evil and new beginnings.
Among the participants were senior Government of Jamaica officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organisations, members of the Indian community and friends of India in Jamaica.
Speaking with JIS News, High Commissioner of India to Jamaica, His Excellency Shri Mayank Joshi, said that the ancient festival, which goes back 2,000 years, is a celebration of friendship and togetherness.
“The celebration is usually with lots of colours, water, fun and dancing. We also celebrate Holi with Indian cuisine, especially sweets, which we exchange with our friends, our neighbours and the whole Indian community,” he said.
He noted that Holi has been held in Jamaica for the last 180 years.
“That is when the first Indians came in 1845. They brought the festival of Holi. Since then, Holi has evolved with modern times,” he said, noting that this year’s event included “energetic Bollywood dances, lively games and delicious Indian cuisine, creating a festive atmosphere for families and friends to celebrate together”.
The popularity of Holi in Jamaica reflects the strong cultural bonds and enduring friendship between India and Jamaica.
