Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Delroy Chuck, is calling on Justices of the Peace (JPs) to take an active role in promoting entrepreneurship as a means of building economic resilience among citizens.
Speaking during the recent commissioning ceremony for new JPs for Portland at Hotel Tim Bamboo in Port Antonio, Minister Chuck said that entrepreneurship is a key driver of prosperity.
“We are doing everything to ensure that more Jamaicans can participate in the national life of this country. We want more persons to be entrepreneurs. Jamaica should never have anyone in poverty,” he said.
He highlighted opportunities in agriculture, noting that there is a demand for poultry, eggs and meat.
“That is what the Prime Minister and the Government are promoting. [We are] urging Jamaicans to find ways and means to be entrepreneurs and to increase productivity, because we want to ensure that Jamaica grows and can become a prosperous place. Jamaica can’t be prosperous unless our people are prosperous,” Mr. Chuck added.
The Minister further encouraged the JPs to upgrade their skills for better earning potential and for those who operate businesses to enhance operations to boost employment and salaries.
He said they should find ways to help each other as part of the Portland Justices of the Peace Association to make the parish a prosperous place.
“Jamaica can be the place where people feel that there’s civility, decency, and that they can live without fear. That must be the Jamaica we’re looking forward to, and I can assure you, we can achieve it if we work together and have the ambition to make Jamaica that place of choice,” the Minister stated.
He noted that the Government is doing its part in bringing prosperity to the east, citing the Port Antonio Bypass, the Morant Bay Urban Centre, among other major developments.
“All of you must not only benefit from it; you must work towards getting it done. You have a role to play in making Portland the parish of choice,” Mr. Chuck said.
