The Full Story

Director General of Road Traffic at the Island Traffic Authority (ITA), Colonel Daniel Pryce, is urging Jamaicans to remain vigilant and prioritise safety on the nation’s roadways, as collisions continue to claim lives across the island.

As of December 30, 2025, Jamaica recorded 374 fatalities resulting from 325 traffic collisions.

“Every life matters. Responsible driving heightens pedestrian awareness, and strict adherence to traffic laws are essential to reducing these preventable tragedies,” Colonel Pryce said, in a Report from the ITA.

Data from the ITA indicate that motorcyclists account for 30 per cent (111) of all fatalities recorded to date.

Notably, motorcyclist deaths have decreased by nine per cent (11 fatalities), when compared with the corresponding period in 2024.

Private motor-vehicle passengers represent 15 per cent (56 fatalities) of road deaths since the start of the year, while public passenger vehicle passengers account for three per cent (12 fatalities).

Overall, vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, pedal cyclists, motorcyclists, and pillion passengers account for 59 per cent of all fatalities recorded so far this year.

In terms of gender distribution, males account for 85 per cent of road fatalities, while females account for 15 per cent.

The Director General expressed concern over the loss of young lives, as 18 children have died in traffic-related incidents as of December 30, 2025. However, this reflects a 25 per cent reduction in child fatalities, compared with the similar period last year.
