Community Relations Officer for the National Works Agency ( NWA) Western Office, Janel Ricketts, said the agency is working to repair a section of breakaway along the Sign main road in St. James.
“The roadway connects commuters and residents from Sign to areas such as Lottery and Virgin Valley. A section of that corridor has been cut off, so persons are now forced to use alternative routes, for example, via Black Shop to access the Lottery community and beyond,” she told JIS News.
She noted that area was “completely washed out” and the restoration of the roadway will enable persons to have freer and quicker access to the communities.
The scope of work, she said “will be similar to what was done by the Chelsea Bridge, also in St. James, where that section was completely eroded by the river”.
“We anticipate that by this weekend we will have at least single-lane access to that particular corridor, and we continue to work on other corridors throughout the parish which would have been affected by Hurricane Melissa,” Ms. Ricketts told JIS News.
In the meantime, the NWA is urging motorists to avoid traversing inundated areas.
“For example, the area by Seven Rivers is heavily inundated. It is not safe to traverse. The water is very high in that area, and we urge persons to exercise due care as they make their way across this particular section and other sections that are also heavily inundated,” Ms. Ricketts cautioned.
