Political and Economic Counsellor at the United States Embassy, George Matthews, has reaffirmed the United States’ strong partnership with Jamaica in combatting human trafficking.

Speaking at the inaugural Caribbean Trafficking in Persons (CarTIP) Forum at Dreams Resort and Spa in Montego Bay, St. James, on July 30, Mr. Matthews highlighted Jamaica’s progress and the shared goal of ending trafficking in the region.

“The United States is proud to stand alongside the Government of Jamaica in this shared fight against trafficking in persons,” he said.

“Jamaica’s Tier Two ranking in the US Trafficking in Persons Report reflects meaningful progress and a strong commitment to addressing this complex challenge,” Mr. Matthews added.

He pointed to the US-Jamaica Child Protection Compact as a key example of collaborative efforts.

“It represents an investment by the United States in strengthening Jamaica’s ability to prevent child trafficking, protect victims, and enhance law-enforcement coordination and prosecutions,” he said.

“The US government continues to advocate for ethical labour practices, which are essential measures to prevent labour exploitation and uphold fair, dignified working conditions for all,” Mr. Mathews outlined.

Looking ahead, Mr. Matthews emphasised the importance of continued cooperation.

“Through open dialogue, shared best practices, and strong regional cooperation, we will continue to protect the vulnerable, pursue justice, and move closer to a future free of trafficking in persons,” he outlined.

Mr. Matthews also emphasised the role of education and community awareness in tackling human trafficking.

“Raising public awareness is one of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against trafficking. We must ensure that communities understand the signs, know their rights, and feel empowered to report suspected cases without fear,” he underscored.
