Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Hon. Delano Seiveright, says the Government is committed to investing in the sector’s most valuable resource, its people.
Speaking with JIS News, Mr. Seiveright noted that the future of the industry hinges on empowering workers, creatives, and innovators who bring the country’s vibrant culture and warm hospitality to the world.
“Our tourism sector is more than just hotels and beaches. It is about the people who make it all happen – the workers, the creatives, and the entrepreneurs,” he said.
“We are investing in their potential, their protection, and their future because a thriving tourism industry begins with a thriving people,” he added.
Highlighting recent initiatives in this regard, Mr. Seiveright noted that the groundbreaking Tourism Workers Pension Scheme, which is a global first, now boasts over 10,000 contributors and has accumulated $4 billion in investments.
This scheme, he said, underscores the Government’s commitment to providing security and dignity for those who form the backbone of the industry.
He further cited the launch of the Entertainers and Creatives Insurance Plan in 2024, which ensures that cultural icons and performers are safeguarded against unforeseen challenges, fostering a more resilient creative community.
In addition, the launch of the Tourism Entertainment Academy, established under the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), will provide targeted training, mentorship, and industry linkages to performers, creatives, and cultural entrepreneurs, equipping them with the skills needed to succeed in a competitive global market, he noted.
“These initiatives are not mere promises. They are concrete, budget-backed actions that give Jamaicans the tools to build a sustainable and prosperous future in the world’s most dynamic industry,” Mr. Seiveright said.
Meanwhile, the State Minister said the Ministry continues to make “real progress” in getting more visitors to the island.
He cited the expansion of airlift, with American Airlines launching the first-ever commercial flight to Ian Fleming International Airport in St. Mary, while United Airlines has increased Jamaica-bound flights by 50 per cent.
“Avelo Airlines introduced nonstop flights from Hartford to Montego Bay, marking its first international route. LATAM Airlines resumed flights from Lima, Peru, facilitating connections to South America. World2Fly will commence flights from Lisbon, Portugal, in June 2025,” he pointed out.
In addition, he said that regional carriers, including InterCaribbean, Bahamasair, and LIAT, continue to strengthen links.
Mr. Seiveright said that the new routes mean “more visitors, more revenue” and more jobs for Jamaicans, noting that “this isn’t just talk; it’s real progress, driven by strategic efforts to connect Jamaica to the world”.
