The Full Story

The Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) in Lyssons, St. Thomas, is celebrating 70 years of service to the people of St. Thomas and surrounding parishes under the theme ‘Celebrating the Past, Embracing the Future’.

Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the Hospital, Kameisha Thomas, told a recent JIS Think Tank that it is a significant milestone for the facility, which serves approximately 120,000 persons across St. Thomas, Eastern Portland and parts of St. Andrew.

“Our activities include a staff recognition and appreciation function, a church service and a cake-cutting ceremony, which we think is important to do on the grounds of the hospital,” Ms. Thomas said.

The church service was held on Sunday (February 23) at the Christ Chapel United Pentecostal Church in Morant Bay, St. Thomas, and was immediately followed by the cake-cutting ceremony and the symbolic release of 70 balloons at the Lyssons Road compound.

The Type C facility was the successor to the former Morant Bay Hospital, which was destroyed by Hurricane Charlie in 1951.

The present hospital was named for and opened by her Royal Highness Princess Margaret at its new location in Lyssons, St. Thomas, on February 23,1955.

It provides 11 specialist services, which include Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anaesthesiology, and Psychiatry.

Ms. Thomas explained that over the hospital’s 70-year history there has been significant infrastructural improvements, including a newly renovated and expanded Accident and Emergency Department, as well as outfitting of a new X-ray Department with equipment to include a new X-ray machine.

“There has also been improvement in laboratory services with Chemistry and Immunology Analysers that are now available,” the Acting CEO said, adding that resurfacing roadworks have also recently been completed on the compound.
