The Full Story

KINGSTON, Sept. 21 (JIS):

The Transport Authority (TA) will be hosting a sensitisation session for hackney carriage service providers operating in downtown Kingston, who are interested in converting to route taxi service.

The event is slated for September 24 at the Water Lane Transport Centre in downtown Kingston, beginning 11:00 a.m.

Managing Director, Ralston Smith, says the meeting is in response to the addition of 11 new routes within the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR).

The Authority will be facilitating the conversion of licenses from hackney carriage to route taxi for persons who want to operate on the newly added routes.

This conversion is expected to alleviate the challenges faced by commuters, who are frequently overcharged to offset hackney fare rates from persons who illegally operate route taxis.

Mr. Smith said the event will provide hackney carriage owners and investors with essential information.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage with Transport Authority management and the police, ask questions and gain insights into the potential impacts of this transition on their businesses,” he told JIS News.

Additionally, information on licensing, compliance and operational guidelines will be shared.

Interested persons are encouraged to contact the Transport Authority at (876) 926-8912 for further details.
