Students Urged to Seize Academic Opportunities Available to Them

Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, is encouraging students to seize the academic opportunities available to them, emphasising the importance of education in shaping their future.
“Apply for a scholarship… access education. The institutions are there [and] there are opportunities [for] young people,” Councillor Vernon said.

He was speaking during the Howard Ward Benefit Foundation Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa in St. James on Tuesday (August 13).

Thirty-five secondary and tertiary students from western Jamaica were awarded scholarships valued $6.5 million to support their academic pursuits.

Councillor Vernon said individuals have a responsibility to contribute to Jamaica’s development and safeguard its future, noting that “we [all] have a part to play… [and]… there are systems in place to help us”, while urging persons to refrain from engaging in illegal activities.

“We are equally responsible for the development of our country and I’m happy that the opportunities are being provided… which means that we can dream and dare to develop as a country. You have a responsibility to safeguard the future of Jamaica,” he maintained.

For his part, President of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI), Oral Heaven, said the scholarships were more than financial aid, pointing out that they represent an investment in Jamaica.

He encouraged the scholarship awardees to embrace the opportunity afforded them to advance their education with gratitude and determination, emphasising the importance of giving back to their communities in the process.

“This level of generosity… is a pure act of kindness that will ripple through generations, creating opportunities and building a stronger, more resilient society. Remember, whatever you want to become, never forget the importance of giving back as you are receiving,” Mr. Heaven stated.
